Data, Smart Security and Comfortable Travel

Airports

It has been proven: security filters are the points where passenger stress rises to its highest level. In turn, it is also demonstrated that degree of stress is directly related to the sales generated in the terminal. On the other hand, airports need to comply with their target off-block time (TOBT) and security filters cannot pose an impediment to meeting this.

We are therefore talking about a reality that directly affects the income statement.

Managers of the airport sector the world over are aware of the importance of improving passenger transit through security filters, while of course ensuring the high standards required by airports and airlines.

Since 2013, IATA and ACI have been working to jointly develop a smart security system to facilitate passenger transit through security controls, assigning security resources based on risk, and optimizing operational efficiency.

In this scenario, as has been occurring in so many others, technological solutions have a lot to contribute. Hence, IATA and ACI are collaborating with leading manufacturers like Ikusi to push for common procedures and standards that promote accurate, fast and friendly security filters.

Airports need solutions that incorporate security filter management systems. These are the so-called CMSs, Checkpoint Management Systems. Thanks to these, airports are able to improve and optimize their processes:

  • Measuring and motorizing the security filter using KPI metrics per ACI and IATA standards.
  • Ensuring compliance with TOBT.
  • Predicting passenger demand.
  • Increasing processing capacity and reducing waiting lines.
  • Optimizing the use of resources (personnel and machinery).
  • Reducing operating costs.
  • Improving the passenger experience.

These security filter management systems can acquire increased capacity to facilitate fast passenger transit if they are integrated with solutions that make it possible to track users during their airport transit, predict passenger demand at any terminal point, and measure the capacity of each airport zone in real time, anticipating bottlenecks or problems at an early stage and enabling the operator to take pro-active measures.

This entails relying on solutions that allow for data gathering, processing the information and placing it at the disposal of the managers and the multiple stakeholders operating in an airport so that these can use it to increase operative efficiency and improve the quality of service perceived by the passenger.
