Digitization reaches the electric grid

Cisco Spain, local partner Ikusi, and Ormazabal launched the first of several pilot projects to digitize electric substations, starting in Puerto Lápice (Ciudad Real).

Electric distribution faces new challenges as consumers also become producers, and the rise of electric vehicles demands new charging infrastructure. This requires greater visibility and intelligence in grid management.

The key to digitization lies in edge computing nodes at substations that gather data on energy generation and consumption and run applications to manage demand and power surges. Cisco provided connectivity and cybersecurity, Ikusi handled solution integration, and Ormazabal developed applications to optimize both the network and the equipment.
