The impact of ChatGPT and AI on Industry 4.0

Why is AI shaking up the industry? Recently, the New York Times reported that Alaska Airlines saved up to 500,000 gallons of fuel in 2023 thanks to optimizations with artificial intelligence (AI). According to Pasha Saleh, their Director of Corporate Development, AI has allowed them to process “an amount of information that no human brain could,” helping them make more efficient decisions.

The rise of Industry 4.0 promises effective optimization of processes and operations. The use of technologies such as AI or the Internet of Things (IoT) can facilitate the daily lives of people and organizations by opening up previously unattainable possibilities.

A game changer

What is Industry 4.0? Just like previous industrial revolutions that propelled us from the invention of the steam engine, the latest leap in our production systems is resulting in an exponential improvement in the efficiency of our operations and businesses.

The ability to integrate and analyze data in real-time from various sources allows for continuous and immediate iterations. For the industry, this means optimizations in production and business processes at all levels.

According to McKinsey, for example, proper implementation of AI can result in performance increases of between 10% and 30% and predictions up to 85% more accurate.

The era of AI and Big data

La IA en la industria 4.0 1

Broadly speaking, the impact of Industry 4.0 can be felt across three main layers or sectors: in large ecosystems, at the organizational level, and personally and individually.

The implementation of AI and Big Data in ecosystems (understood as the network of companies, organizations, and actors operating within a specific industry) is proving to be of great help in the efficient coordination and interaction of all its agents, facilitating strategic planning and accelerating decision-making processes.

For organizations, the adoption of new technologies present in the fourth industrial revolution means the ability to learn from real-time data and adjust their operations accordingly. Process automation allows them to be increasingly responsive, proactive, and predictive, providing better control and monitoring of their developments.

At the individual level, the adoption of Industry 4.0 innovations impacts the people involved in two distinct ways: in their professional lives and their daily environment.

In the first case, Industry 4.0 can mean a significant change in the roles and work activities they perform (see previous blog). In their daily lives, on the other hand, people find in these technologies digital assistants that facilitate their daily activities and provide new opportunities for learning and development, as well as more personalized products and services.

Adopt the future, today

The rise of AI and Industry 4.0 is already revolutionizing the industry and the business sector, and they are just taking their first steps.

With increasingly accelerated innovations and the promise of infinite possibilities yet to be discovered, technologies such as AI, Big Data, and the Internet of Things will continue to revolutionize the current landscape of organizations and their agents in ways we cannot yet imagine.
